Wordless Wednesday - Three Generations

The hubby is the only son of three children, and he has a pretty close relationship with his father.  Its one full of love and laughter, and I always get a kick out of seeing them ribbing each other.

Yesterday he came over to help us plant our backyard garden (hence why this is a day late), and it was so cute seeing the three generations outside doing their thing.  I only hope that Lucas grows up to have the same sort of relationship with his father.

By the look of things it looks like they are heading in that direction.

The little things

Being parents, its so easy to put your relationship on the back burner, and forget that the person who stands next to you isn't just your partner in poop patrol, or your sidekick entertainer, or even your back up singer to every child song you can remember.  He's your partner, period, the one who stands by your side in all facets of life.

When you forget that, its so easy to let little things slide, or even make big issues out of little things.

I sometimes find us arguing over the simplest of things, and often in retrospect silly stuff.  Its easy to let house obligations, and family concerns weigh down a couple when you spend all your energy on the little person in your life.  You find yourself nitpicking over who forgot to take the garbage out, or who left a dirty shirt just laying on the floor, or who forgot to buy more milk.  We are pretty good I must say in having responsibilities divided amongst the two of us, so that these sort of arguments seldom happen, but every once in a while you have an off day, and your patience is worn thin, and you put all your bad mood on that person.

Being in a stable relationship sometimes requires work, but it doesn't feel like it when you communicate with one another, when you make time for each other, and when you try to always remember what made you fall in love with that person every day.  When you become parents, you automatically add to your home workload, and you may find things that used to matter or take precedence no longer have room in your life.  Your relationship should never be one of those things.

The reality is that even though there have been moments in the last few months when we have let worries and concerns strain our relationship, we have never wavered too far from the one truth; that we love each other and are each others best friend; and parenthood has only strengthened that bond.  My mother-in-law once told me that growing up she used to idolize her parents' relationship cause she knew that they loved each other, and that sometimes she felt they lived in their own world separate from their children; that their marriage was just as much as a priority as being parents.  When she sees Gianni and I, she says she sees her parents.  I hope that one day Lucas grows up with that same conviction of his parents' love.

In the last few months, seeing Gianni as a father has only made me love him so much more.  He lives for the smiles that Lucas gives him as he walks through the door, or the early morning tickle fests on the weekends, and the dadas that Lucas so liberally shouts out.  Spending moments on the porch talking watching the little guy discover the world, eating dinner together as a family, encouraging our son to learn and develop, makes me fall in love with the man that he already is, and the new one that he has become.

You find time to hold hands while your son plays in front of you, you lean in for a kiss as your son eats between you, and you exchange a loving look while the little one playfully takes his bath.  Your son will grow up learning that its important to show affection, that you should love and respect that person you share your life with, and hopefully he will become an image of his father's model.

When you have those harried days of despair, when your patience is wearing thin, and you need to time yourself out; remember to forget the little nuances, and cling to the little things that matter, and always remember to laugh.

Our Week in Photos (23/52)

This week was pretty great!  Lucas rocked some great naps, so I got to indulge in some home crafting, which I obviously love.  Plus the little guy was in such a great mood that it made heading out to run errands a breeze, and just hanging out with him such an awesome time.

He's really starting to show a new side to his personality, which is so playful and funny that you can't help but smile at him all the time.

We rocked an Ikea date this week.  Love having lunch with him there, they make it so comfortable for people with kids, and the people there are actually very nice!

Can't wait to cap the week off with a great weekend with friends, and my boys!

Little Letters (vol.6)

Dear Hubby - I love that you love the little notes Lucas and I have been leaving on your lunches, we just want you to know how much we appreciate everything you do for us.

Dear Unread Books - I am slowly getting through the mountain of new books I just read.  I've been really on top of the housework, so its nice to kick back with a coffee and read while the little guy naps...thank you Lucas for 2 hour naps!

Dear New BBQ - I cannot wait for the Hubby to fire you up this weekend, and enjoy some sun (hopefully), good food, a beer, and good company.

Dear Crafts - I have been in the crafty mood lately, and my craft box and house appreciate it lol

Random Fact - Not many people know this but I actually met the hubby through facebook, it was a random poke (do you remember when facebook had those), on my part, and I'm not sorry I did it, cause well for obvious reasons!

Wordless Wednesday - Daddy Time

I recently read a study that the relationship between a child and their father is actually more important in developing a sense of security in babies and young children.  I originally wasn't too sure how I felt about this, after all mothers spend more time in general with their children, and it kind of discredits the role we play in their development.  But after giving it more thought, I think its a beautiful thing, and it fosters such a bond and close relationship between fathers and children.

It makes me happy to know that Lucas is growing up fully aware that his father will always protect him as much as he can, and that their relationship is just as important as the woman who cleans his butt and feeds him 90% of the day!

The study went on to say that rough-housing and playing between fathers and children is very important in motor and social skill building.  This actually makes sense to me.  As mothers we try to do everything we can to help develop our child, but when you're home with them all day you can't spend the entirety of that time playing and doing skill games, as much as I would want to, and sometimes do lol.  There are always things to do around the house, and cooking to be done, I actually try to get Lucas involved in any of these activities, as much as I can, sometimes narrating what I'm doing.  For the most part fathers are the good time people, and I'm ok with that.  It warms my heart when Gianni gets home at the end of the day, and I'm making dinner, so Lucas is running around the kitchen playing with his "kitchen basket", and he immediately runs to the door the moment he hears the knob turn.  Its as if he knows a good time has walked in the door, and well of course he loves his daddy too.

With this in mind we are actually going to implement at least a once a month outing where Gianni takes Lucas out just the two of them.  At least for a few hours, not all day, I'm not ready for that...I know I know I need to learn to let go, I'm trying people.  I think it will be nice and important for both of them to have daddy and Lucas time, and it will be nice for Mommy to have some alone time too hehe.

Long story short, daddy time is just as important to the little people, as much as spending the day with mommy is!

Our Week in Photos (22/52)

This week was pretty good.  The hubby was off on Monday so we took advantage and had some family fun.  Lucas had his first Mandarin lunch and loved it, then we headed to costco to do some shopping, the little guy is obsessed with the lights at any store.

The weather was on the glum side on Tuesday so Lucas and I hung around the house, but the boy looked adorable in his doodle pants!

Mid-week Lucas was cranky city, not sure if it was cause the weather got warmer, or it was his teeth, cause they made a huge leap forward this week.  But he finally cooled down eventually.  He tried waffles for the first time this week and loved them!  We really lucked out in the food department, his new fave this week in cucumber, we bought baby ones cause the seeds are softer and easier to digest, and he likes them cold.

Thursday Lucas was rocking some cool Superman duds, and we just chilled, or rather baked in the heat.  Lucas has not been falling asleep in the stroller lately on our walks, but this week he passed out good after a trip to the park, tell me you saw the pic of his hat over his eyes and him in blissful slumber.

The week ended pretty relaxed, he was in much brighter spirits so I got to get some cleaning done around the house, while he played around me.  All in all pretty great.

We start music and reading classes again next week so I'm pretty excited!

Just one more of his little cuteness in doodlepants.

Little Letters (vol.5)

Dear Patio - I can't wait for you to get done this weekend, and then me and the little man are going to spend the whole darn summer living it up out there.

Dear Gordan Ramsey - thank you for mixing two of my guilty pleasures, reality tv and cooking shows, and making my summer viewing worthwhile.

Dear Oven - I am so in the need for a baking fix, so get ready for some sweet goodness coming your way this weekend.

Dear Lucas - I appreciate your desire to walk, I'm a proud mommy watching you toddle along the furniture, but slow it down, I'm not ready for this.

Random fact about me - I love a clean house, but having a child has curbed my OCD a little; I still like to clean up and give the house a good curb down whenever the child gives me the chance!
