Wordless Wednesday - On the move

We have a crawler!  This isn't necessarily a new development.  He started crawling the weekend he turned 7 months, and he hasn't looked back since!  Last month he had been showing signs of wanting to be on the move, and he was trying to sit up on his own, the moment he figured that out crawling just came naturally to him.  He hasn't looked back since.  He now follows me everywhere, and he's been pretty adventurous, reaching things and climbing anything close by, I fear walking is in the near future, and I'm just not ready for that.

I love seeing him discover though, its like he's realising how much space there is around the house, and he just gets around to his hearts content.  I'm not going to lie I'm way more exhausted at the end of the day running around after the little bugger, but I'm also loving the new sense of independence he has.  We have had to put up a gate to avoid the stairs, he had a certain fascination with the front entrance right by the stairs, which he has already started to show an interest in climbing...Lord help me and little boys love for adventure!

My Mini Foodista

We started Lucas on solids fairly early, as he seemed really keen to start on something substantial, and kept eyeing our dinners all the time.  I just read an article in the Parenting magazine that it is a common occurrence for parents to introduce solids too early, mostly because people feel like the babies need the extra sustenance, that it is believed that it will help babies sleep through the night, and for the very reason I stated, cause the child seems interested in food.  Regardless of what experts may think, I believe every child is different and every parent should make the individual decision that they feel comfortable about.  That being said next time around I may try to hold off a little later though, cause we did have a few issues with Lucas, and I will make different choices as to what I would introduce first.

At about four months we tried rice cereal as a way to introduce the act of using a spoon, and ingesting mashed up food.  We also tried oat cereal, but it irritated his eczema so I held off on all other cereals until about 6 months.  He had good days, and he had days when he wanted nothing to do with it.  The first week we did cereal I tried different times of the day each day to see when he seemed "hungrier" for the solids.  I found that it really differed each day, and there were times when he would just spit up the whole portion 5 minutes after the meal.  I'm not sure if this happened cause the rice cereal was not to his liking, or because its essentially a filler with no nutritional value, because when we started introducing better foods, in my view, he liked and ingested it a lot better.  Therefore I don't think I will use cereal as a starter food with our next child, as I feel that Lucas had a bit of a rough start, not because he wasn't ready cause he enjoyed "eating", cereal just did not agree with him.  We have since been able to introduce oatmeal cereal for breakfast, but I lace it with actual fruit so that it is a half and half mixture.

I love this stunned look from Lucas the first time he had cereal, he wasn't quite sure about it, and I guess I get it, after all it didn't look anything like what mommy and daddy eat.

He was a little more sure about it after a few spoonfuls.

At about 5 months we started fruits and veggies, adhering to the four day rule, starting with apples
and sweet potato.  He loved both, and apples is still his go to comfort food, and I use it a lot as a mixer for different concoctions, and to make anything a little looser and juicier.  Some of the highlights of what he's been introduced to is peas, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, green beans (the only veg he dislikes), corn, rice, plums, peaches, berries, pears, avocado (he loves) just to name a few.

I make all of Lucas' food with the exception of a few fruits, namely banana (although now he's eating pieces of banana as well as heinz cups), and berries, which tend to be really watery when I've attempted to make them.  He loves plums and peaches that I make, and they are great mixed in with avocado, or in his morning oatmeal.  I have used frozen peaches, Harvest brand, and I have found that they are a great alternative until I can find fresh that are of good quality.  Because of his love for apple sauce, I found a sugar free, organic brand that I love, and I buy it in jars cause of the amount we go through in a week.  Making Lucas' food and meals brings me a lot of satisfaction.  I love knowing exactly what he is eating, and I find that the texture of homemade food is more appealing.  We actually bought a jar of sweet potato once, and he wanted nothing to do with it, then when I gave him homemade sweet potato mash he ate it like a champ.  Enough said!  I am constantly scouring the internet and cook books for baby meal ideas, especially since he is eating more variety now, and I love making variations of meals that the hubby and I eat as well.

Lucas at 7 1/2 months is already eating three meals a day, including four 7 ounce bottles during the day (he dropped the middle of the night feedings about 2 months ago).  His meals usually comprise of a cereal and fruit in the morning (we tried crepes last week and he devoured it!); a vegetable (or maybe pastina which we introduced this week and he loved) and fruit for lunch, and a "meal" at dinner, usually a soup, or meat and veggie combo with maybe a little fruit to top him off.  He has a really healthy appetite, and I actually find that we sometimes have to edit how much we give him cause he's a little greedy and then just spits up the extra.  I have to say that we got pretty lucky in that Lucas is not a picky eater at all, and he is quite adventurous in trying new things, especially now that he enjoys table and finger food, I find him trying things that we ourselves are eating.  For example he tried papaya from my salad the other day and loved it, the look of suspicion he gave it though was beyond hilarious.

A big bump in the road has been when we tried to introduce yogurt to the little guy.  I got the go ahead from our doctor to give baby yogurts, which are essentially cheese, and don't get me wrong the kid absolutely loved it.  Don't believe me....

Yup that cuteness happened when he tried it, but an hour later he was puking it up, and it wasn't pretty.  Since then I have tried introducing it at different times, even different cheeses like ricotta, and the outcome is always the same.  I'm not sure if its still too early for his tummy, or if in fact this may be a sign of lactose intolerance.  He's usually fine if I put a little Parmesan in his pasta or veggie but besides that it definitely hasn't agreed with him.

We started on lean meats like turkey and chicken this month and he's done great with it, although he prefers to chew it rather than have it mashed, which I find funny since none of his teeth have ripped out yet.  He's got incredibly tough gums!  I also made a halibut and broccoli mash for him recently and like his cousin he adores fish!  I know that experts feel that fish should be held off but we haven't experienced any problems thus far, and like I said its his fave protein right now.

We have been encouraging finger food too lately, mostly chicken and turkey, and acceptable fruits like banana and pear.  And sometimes its just fun to see him chomp down on things...

There you have it our little foodista in the making.

Charity Date Night

Gianni and I went on our first big date night Saturday, and it was all for a good cause.

My 3 year old cousin was born with short bowel syndrome, and we are lucky to live in a city with one of the best children's hospitals in the world. Sick Kids.  They have a program devoted entirely to this condition, and it is where Daniel receives all his care.  To better understand his condition it is described on their website as the following:

"A condition that develops primarily as a result of birth defects or sometimes from acquired intestinal disease, short bowel syndrome (SBS) usually presents in newborn babies. Because of their 'short gut' these babies are not able to absorb the necessary nutrients to sustain life and require intravenous nutrition to maintain their growth and survival. Although these supplements are vital, over time the intravenous nutrition is also toxic to their young immature livers and can lead to liver failure and ultimately death. For many, survival is dependent on GIFT's ability to protect these babies' livers from further damage long enough for their remaining intestine to compensate and absorb the amount of nutrients needed or until they can receive an intestinal transplant."

Daniel for all intents purposes has been leading a very normal childhood, and it is a credit to how my aunt and uncle parent him, they are amazing role models.  He is such a spunky kid, with a feisty sense of humour and is not afraid to tell you how it is.  This is a recent photo of him MCing Lucas' baptism lol

This was the first year that Gianni and I attended the Gala that the program hosts every year to raise money and awareness for this cause.  I have always had the utmost respect, and concern for all that my aunt and uncle have gone through dealing with Daniel's condition, and it was an honour to hear them speak about their experiences as the key note speakers this year.  As a family we have seen all that they have been through, and witnessed first hand the type of care that Daniel requires daily, but it was striking to listen to the emotions my aunt and uncle felt when they received the diagnosis shortly after Daniel's birth.  I was brought to tears when my aunt recounted how it took months before she could hold Daniel without being hooked up to any sort of machines, and all I could think of was I need to remember that the next time I hold my baby, and say a little prayer of thanks for all that I have in my life.

Please visit the Sick Kids website, and if you're going to make any charity donations this year, let this one be your top choice.

On a side note, it was nice to get dressed up and go out.  I have been living in sweats, and comfortable clothes since becoming a mom, cause really who wants to get dressed up when you're child is a spit up machine, and prone to any other out fluxes of bodily fluids.  Sometimes you just need to spend some adult time with the hubby, and other people, and have a conversation that isn't just one-sided, or answered by the constant repetition of dada, and grunts.  However, this is a once in a while thing for me, cause I couldn't stop thinking of my little guy, and I'm not going to lie we slipped out on the early side, just so I could get home to him (also I knew he would be waking up at his usual 5:30 so late is 11 for me, if I want to get any sleep at all).

Here's some highlights of the evening with my fam.

Love this picture of my mom and I.

Our Week in Photos (18/52)

This week has been filled with runny noses, and teething crankiness.  Crawling around the house, and finding ways to escape as fast as he can.  We had a few moments at the park when the weather got nicer mid week.

Lucas discovered grass when he bbqed with daddy, and he wasn't too sure about it yet, but I'm dreading the moment he puts it his mouth, nowadays, everything finds its way in his mouth.  I'm constantly disinfecting his hands and toys!

Made a huge vat of caldo verde (Portuguese kale soup) my mom would be proud of, and Lucas had his first taste of it and loved it!

Through it all my little man still found ways to be his cute self.

Tonight Gianni and I are off to our first official date night at a charity gala!

Letter of Apology and Thanks

Dear Mommy,

I've been a butt this week I know, especially yesterday.  I'm sorry I used your body like my personal jungle gym, but being beside you makes me feel better.  I hope you don't mind that I kept following you into the kitchen, and planting myself by your feet, but its quite fun to climb up your legs, especially when you're making coffee, just don't get any on me ok.  Thank you for the basket of toys and books in the living room, but if you're not going to sit with me, they really aren't all that fun to me this week.

Thank you for putting up with my crankiness, and wailing like a banshee around the house, but I don't know any other way to let you know that this damn runny nose is bothering me, and that breathing from my mouth while its a drool fest is quite inconvenient. I think I may have some teeth coming out, my gums are sore, and I feel like a faucet has been opened in my mouth, I keep chewing on my fingers, and toys, but they are nothing compared to your clothes and hands...sorry.

It was great to get out of the house yesterday to go to the store, and I didn't mean to have a poop storm the moment we got there.  I tried to let it out before we left the house like usual, but everything was a little backed up in there, and I guess the car ride helped get things moving.  You know how it is, so cut me a little slack here.  I'm sorry though for screaming through the whole diaper change debacle but darn strangers kept looking at me with my business out in the open, and it was awfully cold in that bathroom.  But I appreciate how you kept your cool and sang me my favourite songs through it all, I guess I just needed a minute.  The extra hug and kisses sure made me feel better and I hope you liked the smiles I gave you while we shopped as a thank you.

I'm sorry for the mini meltdown at the checkout, but that strange man kept talking to me, and he freaked me out with his laughs.  I'm usually all smiles for people, but this dude was scary looking! You were super calming me down while paying and getting the groceries, I don't know how you do it all sometimes!

Oops I fell asleep in the car, sorry, all that crying really pooped me out, sometimes its hard not being able to talk, I really need to get on that.  I meant to stay asleep when we got home, I'm usually good being transferred into my crib, you got to give me that, but I just wanted to lie next to you, and then I couldn't sleep cause I rocked my power nap...I mean didn't you hear my snoring in the car, awesome right?!

Playing and crawling around the house is so much better than sleeping anyway.  I'm loving this crawling, now I can crawl to the front entrance and grab Tia Gyselle's picture all the time, but I'm not sure why you yell out when I grab the doily for some extra traction...oh is it the vase that's on the table you're worried about, you really should just move that thing.  Now I can crawl into the bathroom whenever you escape for five minutes, I mean really I wasn't finished talking to you, and that light in there is just too cool.  Wait until I master walking, then it will be party city between us, right mommy?  Right?!

Anyway, I'm glad you put up with my shenanigans, although I'm pretty sure I'm well behaved for my age, and any disobedience is probably inherited from daddy so you should take it up with him.  All in all sorry for any inconvenience, and I just wanted to let you know that you're doing a super job making me feel loved and safe; I'm pretty lucky to have a mommy like you, and I pay in kind by being any awesome son!

Love you lots Lucas.

Wordless Wednesday - Daddy's Little Helper

When we found out we were having a boy, I remember thinking Gianni gets to have a little guy to teach how to tinker with things around the house.  Never thought his interest would be piqued at such a young age!

I love this moment I caught of Lucas wanting to get in on the action while daddy installed the new sink in the laundry room.

"Hold on a second daddy I need a better look at what you're doing there"

Super happy to be involved in the renos I guess hehe

Happy hump day everyone!
